The Volkswagen Corrado was a sporty coupe produced by the German automaker from 1988 to 1995. It was positioned as a more stylish and luxurious alternative to the Golf GTI, and offered a range of powerful engines and performance-oriented features. The Corrado was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign studio, and it boasted a sleek, aerodynamic profile with a drag coefficient of just 0.30. Its distinctive features included pop-up headlights, a prominent rear spoiler, and a sloping roofline that gave it a distinctive coupe silhouette. The Corrado was available with a variety of engine options, including the 1.8-liter 16-valve engine with either 134 hp or 160 hp, and the highly acclaimed 1.8-liter G60 supercharged engine with 158 hp. In 1992, the Corrado received a significant update, including the introduction of the VR6 engine, a narrow-angle 2.8-liter V6 that delivered 174 hp. The VR6 engine provided a unique blend of power and refinement, making it a popular choice for performance enthusiasts. Later on, the Corrado was also offered with the 2.9-liter VR6 engine, which produced 190 hp. The Corrado was praised for its handling, which was aided by its independent suspension and rear-wheel drive layout. It also offered a comfortable and well-appointed interior, with features such as power windows, central locking, and a sunroof. However, the Corrado was discontinued after 1995 due to declining sales, primarily as a result of increasingly stringent safety regulations and the growing popularity of SUVs. Despite its short production run, the Volkswagen Corrado remains a highly sought-after classic car for its sporty styling, impressive performance, and engineering excellence.
