The Austin Metro, later known as the MG Metro, was a supermini car produced by British Leyland and later Rover Group from 1980 to 1990. It was a significant departure from its predecessor, the Austin Mini, featuring a front-wheel drive layout and a more spacious interior. The Metro was developed under the codename "ADO 67" and was designed by British Leyland's chief stylist, Roy Haynes. It was intended to be a smaller, more fuel-efficient and affordable alternative to the Mini. The Metro was launched in 1980 and was initially available with a range of four-cylinder petrol engines, including a 998 cc unit and a more powerful 1275 cc option. The car was also offered with a 1.3-liter diesel engine, making it one of the first diesel-powered superminis on the market.

The Austin Metro was a popular car in the United Kingdom, achieving strong sales figures, primarily due to its practicality and affordability. However, the car faced competition from other superminis such as the Ford Fiesta and the Vauxhall Nova. In 1982, the Metro was given a facelift, with new bumpers, grille, and interior trim. A sporty "Metro Turbo" model was also introduced, featuring a turbocharged 1.3-liter engine. In 1984, MG introduced its own version of the Metro, the MG Metro. It was offered with a more powerful 1.3-liter engine and a sportier suspension. The MG Metro was aimed at a more performance-oriented market and was well-received by critics and enthusiasts. The Austin Metro continued to evolve throughout its production run, with a further facelift in 1987. Ultimately, the Metro was discontinued in 1990, replaced by the Rover 100, which was based on the Metro's platform and shared many components. The legacy of the Austin Metro lives on in the form of its successors and its impact on the supermini segment, paving the way for modern compact cars.
