The BMW 8 Series, internally designated as the E31, was a luxury grand tourer produced by BMW from 1989 to 1999. It was the first BMW to feature a V12 engine since the 1930s, and was an attempt by the German automaker to reclaim its position as a maker of highly desirable, high-performance luxury vehicles. Designed by Claus Luthe, the 8 Series was a groundbreaking design, featuring a sleek, aerodynamic body with a distinctive sloping roofline reminiscent of the E24 6 Series. This aerodynamic profile, coupled with its advanced technology, made the 8 Series one of the most technologically advanced and aerodynamic cars of its time.

The E31 8 Series was powered by a range of engines, including the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V12 in the 850i, a turbocharged 5.0-liter V12 in the 850i, and a 4.4-liter V8 in the 840i. The 850i, with its powerful V12 engine, quickly gained a reputation for its smooth performance and luxurious appointment. The 8 Series also featured a number of advanced technologies for its time, including an electronically controlled suspension, ABS brakes, traction control, and a digital instrument cluster. Despite its technological advancements and sleek styling, the E31 8 Series was not a commercial success for BMW. Production ended in 1999, with just over 30,000 units built. However, it has since become a cult classic, highly regarded by enthusiasts for its performance, styling, and luxurious appointments.
