The BMW K1200RS, often simply referred to as the K 1200 RS, is a sport touring motorcycle that was produced by BMW Motorrad from 1997 to 2004. It was a significant departure from its predecessor, the K100RS, featuring a completely redesigned engine and chassis. The K1200RS was powered by a 1157cc four-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, producing 129 hp and 95 lb-ft of torque. This powerful engine was paired with a 6-speed gearbox and a shaft drive, providing smooth and reliable power delivery. The motorcycle's chassis was also completely redesigned, featuring a sturdy aluminum frame and a telescopic fork front suspension with a single-sided swingarm rear suspension. This combination provided a comfortable and responsive ride, making the K1200RS well-suited for both touring and spirited riding.

The K1200RS was lauded for its innovative design features. These included an optional ABS system, a digital instrument cluster, and a distinctive "shark-nose" fairing that offered excellent wind protection. The motorcycle was also known for its smooth and refined performance, with the four-cylinder engine providing ample power for both highway cruising and spirited riding. However, the K1200RS was not without its drawbacks. The large size and weight of the motorcycle could be challenging for some riders, especially in slow-speed maneuvering. The K1200RS was also criticized for its high price tag, making it a less affordable option compared to its competitors. Despite these drawbacks, the BMW K1200RS remained a popular choice for sport touring enthusiasts, offering a blend of performance, comfort, and practicality that was difficult to match. The model was eventually replaced by the K1200GT in 2005, marking the end of the K1200RS era.
