The BMW R850 R, R850GS, and R850R are a series of motorcycles produced by BMW Motorrad from 1996 to 2001. These bikes represent a significant shift in BMW's motorcycle lineup, marking the introduction of a new generation of air-cooled boxer engines with a larger 850cc displacement. This change brought with it increased power and torque, making them capable touring machines. The R850 R catered to the sport-touring rider, boasting a sleek, aerodynamic design and a focus on agility and handling. The R850GS, on the other hand, was designed for adventure touring, featuring a rugged, off-road-ready chassis with longer suspension travel, a higher seat height, and a larger fuel tank. The R850R was a more modest version of the R850 R, offering a more relaxed riding experience. Despite being air-cooled, the R850 series engines offered a significant power boost over their predecessors. They featured a new, more efficient cylinder head design with four valves per cylinder and a revised camshaft profile. These modifications resulted in a smoother power delivery with greater torque across the rev range. The R850 series also introduced a new dual-spark ignition system and a revised fuel injection system, enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions. Furthermore, these bikes featured a new, lighter and stronger aluminum frame, offering a more rigid and responsive riding experience. The suspension was also upgraded with a new, more responsive front fork and a rear swingarm with a single shock absorber. Although these bikes were designed for different purposes, they all shared a common core, delivering a blend of performance, comfort, and reliability that made them popular choices for both seasoned riders and newcomers alike.
