The Citroën GS and GSA were a series of compact cars produced by the French manufacturer Citroën from 1970 to 1986. They were designed by a team led by the Italian designer, Flaminio Bertoni, and were notable for their innovative features, including a hydropneumatic suspension system, a lightweight yet rigid body, and a distinctive aerodynamic design. The GS was initially launched as a 2-door hatchback, but was later expanded to include a 3-door hatchback, a 4-door sedan, and a 5-door estate variant. The GSA, a facelifted version of the GS, was introduced in 1979 and featured a larger front grille, revised taillights, and a more spacious interior. The GS and GSA were powered by a range of four-cylinder petrol engines, ranging in displacement from 1.0 to 1.2 liters. While the GS was initially known for its performance and fuel economy, its later iterations were criticized for their lack of power, and the GSA was considered to lack the sophistication of the original GS. Despite their shortcomings, the GS and GSA gained a loyal following, especially in Europe, where they were praised for their unique styling, comfortable ride, and spacious interiors. The GS, in particular, was a critical and commercial success, winning the European Car of the Year award in 1971. The GS and GSA, along with the CX, helped Citroën establish a reputation for building innovative and stylish cars, and their influence can still be felt in modern Citroën models.
