The Citroën GS and GSA are compact family cars produced by the French automaker Citroën from 1970 to 1986. The GS, launched in 1970, was a revolutionary car for its time, featuring a lightweight, aerodynamic design, a front-wheel drive layout, and a sophisticated hydropneumatic suspension system. This unique combination resulted in a car that was both comfortable and sporty, offering excellent handling and ride quality. The GS was a commercial success, winning the prestigious "Car of the Year" award in 1971. It was known for its fuel efficiency, spacious interior, and innovative features like a "self-leveling" suspension and a "directional" headlight system that automatically adjusted the beam angle in corners. The GSA, introduced in 1979, was essentially a facelifted version of the GS, featuring a revised front end, larger rear lights, and a more angular dashboard. The GSA also received a new, more powerful engine, a 1.3-liter unit that replaced the previous 1.1-liter engine. Both the GS and GSA were praised for their reliability and durability, thanks in part to their simple and robust mechanical design. Despite their success, production of the GS and GSA ended in 1986, replaced by the larger and more modern Citroën BX. However, these models remain popular with classic car enthusiasts, appreciated for their distinctive styling, innovative engineering, and comfortable driving experience.
