The Porsche 944 is a sports car produced by the German manufacturer Porsche from 1982 to 1991. It was the first water-cooled, front-engined, rear-wheel drive Porsche since the 356/1, a significant departure from the traditional rear-engine layout of the 911. The 944 was designed as a more affordable and accessible sports car, aiming to attract a wider audience than the more expensive and performance-focused 911. It was initially powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine based on the Audi 5-cylinder engine, producing 150 horsepower, which was later upgraded to a 2.7-liter version with 163 horsepower. The 944 offered a balanced blend of performance, handling, and comfort, earning praise for its responsive steering, well-tuned suspension, and luxurious interior. It also featured a unique transaxle design, with the gearbox mounted at the rear axle, which provided excellent weight distribution and improved handling.

The 944 underwent several updates and revisions throughout its production lifespan, leading to various model variants. The 944 Turbo, introduced in 1985, featured a turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter engine, boasting 217 horsepower and significantly improved performance. The 944 S, introduced in 1987, featured a larger 3.0-liter engine producing 208 horsepower, while the 944 S2, launched in 1989, got an even more powerful 3.0-liter engine with 211 horsepower. The 944 was ultimately discontinued in 1991, replaced by the 968, which offered a similar design and concept but with a new 3.0-liter V6 engine. Despite being overshadowed by the iconic 911, the 944 remains a popular and respected sports car, known for its unique styling, engaging driving experience, and relative affordability compared to other Porsches.
