The Ferrari Mondial 8 Quattrovalvole is a mid-engine, two-door, 2+2 sports car that was produced by Italian automaker Ferrari from 1981 to 1985. It was the first model in the Mondial series, a lineup intended to succeed the 308 GT4, and was a significant departure from its predecessor, showcasing a more luxurious and refined approach. The Mondial 8 Quattrovalvole, meaning "eight four-valve," was powered by a 3.0-liter, 90-degree V8 engine, featuring four valves per cylinder, a departure from the previous generation's two valves per cylinder. This engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission, produced 214 horsepower and propelled the car from 0 to 60 mph in under 7 seconds. The Mondial 8 Quattrovalvole's design, penned by Pininfarina, featured a more angular and aerodynamic body than its predecessor. While retaining the mid-engine layout, the Mondial 8 Quattrovalvole offered a more spacious cabin and a larger trunk, providing greater practicality for everyday use. Compared to the 308 GT4, the Mondial 8 Quattrovalvole was also heavier, due to its more robust construction and luxurious interior appointments, which included leather upholstery, power windows, and air conditioning. Despite its focus on comfort and practicality, the Mondial 8 Quattrovalvole remained a true sports car, delivering a thrilling driving experience thanks to its sharp handling and responsive engine. While not as sought-after as its more iconic predecessors like the 308 and the Testarossa, the Mondial 8 Quattrovalvole remains a unique and interesting example of Ferrari's evolutionary approach to sports car design during the early 1980s.
