The **Jaguar XK8** and **XKR** (internally designated as **X100**) are two-door grand tourers produced by Jaguar Cars from 1996 to 2006. They marked a significant departure from the outgoing XJS, incorporating a completely new platform, powertrains, and styling. The XK8 was launched in 1996 as a 1997 model year, replacing the venerable XJS after 21 years of production. The XKR, a performance-oriented variant with a supercharged engine, followed in 1998. Both models were praised for their sleek and modern design, luxurious interiors, and powerful engines. The XK8's design, penned by Ian Callum, was heavily influenced by the 1996 Jaguar XK180 concept car, boasting a distinctive, sloping grille, a long, flowing hood, and a fastback profile. The XKR further emphasized its sporty demeanor with more aggressive styling cues, including a distinctive front bumper, larger air intakes, and unique side skirts. Underneath the sleek exterior, the XK8 and XKR offered a well-rounded driving experience. The base XK8 featured a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter AJ-V8 engine, producing 290 horsepower, while the XKR boasted a supercharged version of the same engine, delivering a potent 370 horsepower. Both engines were paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, sending power to the rear wheels. The XK8 offered a comfortable and refined ride, while the XKR provided sharper handling and quicker acceleration. The X100 platform, shared with the contemporary Ford Thunderbird, offered a robust foundation for the XK8 and XKR, providing a solid chassis and a comfortable ride quality. Although the styling was dramatically different from the outgoing XJS, the X100 series retained the hallmarks of Jaguar grand touring cars, offering a blend of performance, luxury, and refinement.
