The Sunbeam Rapier and Alpine were a pair of sporty British cars produced by Rootes Motors from 1957 to 1976. The Rapier was a compact four-seater coupe or convertible, while the Alpine was a two-seater roadster. Both models shared the same basic platform and underpinnings, featuring a unibody construction and a front-mounted, rear-wheel drive layout. The Rapier and Alpine were offered with a range of engines over the years, initially powered by a 1.1-litre four-cylinder engine. Subsequent models saw the introduction of larger engines, including a 1.3-litre, 1.6-litre, and even a 1.7-litre unit depending on the model year and market. The cars' styling evolved over the years, with the Rapier undergoing a major redesign in 1967 to introduce a more modern and angular shape. The Alpine, on the other hand, remained relatively unchanged throughout its lifecycle, retaining its classic roadster proportions.

Despite being designed to appeal to a sporty driving enthusiast, the Sunbeam Rapier and Alpine weren't exclusively focused on performance. They were also marketed as practical and affordable vehicles, offering a satisfying blend of economy and driving enjoyment. The Rapier, in particular, proved popular as a family car, thanks to its spacious cabin and respectable practicality. The Alpine, with its open-top design, became a popular choice for those seeking a more exhilarating driving experience. Both models were known for their agile handling and responsive performance, making them enjoyable to drive on winding roads. However, their inherently simple construction and use of older technology meant that they could be prone to mechanical issues, particularly as their age increased. This factor, combined with the increasing popularity of lighter, more fuel-efficient, and more reliable rivals in the late 1970s, led to the discontinuation of the Rapier and Alpine in 1976.
