The 2006 Kia Sorento, a mid-size SUV, marked a significant step forward for Kia in the American market. Introduced in 2003, the first-generation Sorento was a relatively unrefined offering, but the 2006 model year saw a complete redesign that aimed to address its shortcomings and establish itself as a serious contender in the competitive SUV segment. With a larger, more sophisticated body, a roomier interior, and a more powerful engine lineup, the 2006 Sorento was a significant upgrade over its predecessor. Its styling was more modern and contemporary, with sleek lines and an aggressive front grille. The interior, meanwhile, offered more passenger space and comfort, with improved materials and a more user-friendly layout. The 2006 Sorento was offered with a choice of two engines: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 162 horsepower and a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 235 horsepower. Both engines were mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, and the Sorento came standard with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive was available as an option. The Sorento offered a variety of features, including standard anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control. Optional features included leather upholstery, a sunroof, and a powerful sound system. Despite its improvements, the 2006 Sorento still faced a tough competitive landscape. Although it offered good value for money, its fuel economy was relatively poor compared to its rivals, and its handling was not as sharp as some of its competitors. Nevertheless, the 2006 Sorento was a significant improvement over its predecessor and helped Kia to establish itself as a serious player in the SUV market.
