The Chrysler Conquest, a sporty coupe produced from 1988 to 1990, was a unique offering in the American automaker's lineup. Unlike most Chrysler vehicles of the era, the Conquest wasn't developed in-house. Instead, it was a rebadged Mitsubishi Starion, a collaboration that aimed to bring a more sophisticated and performance-oriented option to the American market. The Conquest was available in two distinct flavors: the base model and the turbocharged "Tsi" variant. Both shared the same sleek, aerodynamic bodywork and a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration, but their performance capabilities differed significantly. The base model, powered by a 2.0 liter, naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine, offered respectable performance for its time. However, the true allure lay in the Conquest Tsi, which boasted a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine producing 175 horsepower. This, combined with the car's relatively light weight and rear-wheel-drive layout, resulted in a fun and agile driving experience.

Beyond the engine, the Conquest offered a relatively sophisticated interior for the time. It was equipped with a comfortable and stylish cabin, featuring comfortable seats, a well-designed dashboard, and a range of features like power windows, power locks, and a premium sound system. The Conquest, however, faced a number of challenges. Despite its sporty intentions, it was criticized for its lack of refinement, particularly in comparison to competitors like the Toyota Supra. Moreover, the Conquest was sold at a time when the American market was shifting towards larger, more comfortable vehicles, leaving the sporty coupe niche to Japanese competitors. Ultimately, the Conquest's limited production run and lack of widespread appeal resulted in its discontinuation after just three model years. Even though the Conquest's legacy is brief, it remains a fascinating example of Chrysler's attempt to tap into the performance car market by partnering with a Japanese manufacturer. For fans of 1980s automobiles, the Conquest Tsi holds a special place as a well-balanced and surprisingly engaging sports car.
