The Škoda 120 L, 120 LE, 120 LS, and 120 LSE were a series of compact cars produced by the Czech manufacturer Škoda from 1976 to 1990. This model marked a departure from the rear-engined design that had characterized Škoda vehicles for decades, adopting a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. This configuration brought with it a number of advantages, including improved handling and passenger space. The 120 series was based on the Škoda 105/120 platform, which was also shared with the Škoda 105, 130, and Rapid models. The 120 L was the basic model, while the LE featured a more luxurious interior and the LS and LSE versions added exterior trim and sportier styling. The car was powered by a 1.2-liter, four-cylinder engine that produced between 48 and 55 horsepower. Despite the somewhat limited power output, the 120 series was a practical and reliable car that proved popular in both Eastern Europe and Western markets. The 120 L’s simple design and durable construction made it a favorite for taxi services and as a family car. The Škoda 120 L served as the basis for numerous variations, including the Škoda Garde, a small estate car, and the Škoda Pick-Up, a light commercial vehicle. The Škoda 120 series, however, also faced criticism for its lack of modern features and its dated design. Ultimately, the production of the 120 line ended in 1990 as Škoda transitioned to more modern and advanced vehicles. Despite its relatively short lifespan, the Škoda 120 series left a lasting mark on the Czech car industry, representing a successful transition to a more modern and commercially competitive design.
