The Ford Escape Hybrid, produced from 2005 to 2008, was a pioneering model in the realm of hybrid SUVs. This vehicle marked Ford's first foray into the hybrid market, offering consumers a fuel-efficient alternative to its popular Escape gasoline-powered counterpart. The Escape Hybrid employed a sophisticated powertrain combining a 2.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. This system generated a combined 155 horsepower, enabling the Escape Hybrid to achieve an impressive fuel economy of 36 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, significantly exceeding the fuel efficiency of its gasoline-powered counterpart.

The Escape Hybrid's innovative technology went beyond just fuel savings. It boasted features like regenerative braking, which captured energy during deceleration and braking to recharge the battery, and an electric-only mode, allowing for silent and emission-free driving at low speeds. The interior of the Escape Hybrid was generally similar to the gasoline-powered Escape, offering comfortable seating for five passengers and a reasonable amount of cargo space. However, the hybrid system did intrude slightly on storage space due to the battery pack located under the rear cargo floor. Despite its groundbreaking technology, the Escape Hybrid faced challenges in the market due to its higher price point compared to the gasoline-powered Escape. This, combined with the limited availability of charging infrastructure at the time, limited its overall appeal. Nonetheless, the Ford Escape Hybrid represented a significant step towards a more sustainable future in the SUV segment and paved the way for future hybrid models from Ford and other manufacturers.
