The Ford Escort RS, produced from 1985 to 1987, was a hot hatch variant of the third generation Ford Escort, specifically designed for performance and rally racing. It was a true successor to the legendary Mk1 Escort RS2000, carrying the same sporting spirit and aiming to capture the hearts of enthusiasts. Unlike its predecessor, the Escort RS wasn't a production model but rather a homologation special, built to meet Group A rally regulations. This meant a limited production run of 5000 units, making it a rare and highly sought-after classic today. Power came from a 1.6-liter CVH engine, tuned to produce a potent 105 bhp, a significant increase over the standard Escort. This power was delivered to the front wheels through a close-ratio 5-speed gearbox, allowing for quick acceleration and spirited handling. The RS also featured a number of unique features, including a motorsport-inspired suspension with adjustable dampers, wider wheels and tires, flared wheel arches, a rear spoiler, and a distinctive body kit.

The Escort RS was a massive success in its time, dominating the British Touring Car Championship and achieving numerous rally victories. Fans loved its agile handling, responsive engine, and classic looks. While the Escort RS was initially available as a 3-door hatchback, it was later joined by a 5-door model, catering to a wider range of needs. However, its production run ended in 1987, making way for the new Mk4 Escort RS Turbo. The legacy of the Escort RS lives on, especially amongst those who enjoyed the thrill of driving a true hot hatch with a pedigree in motorsport. Today, these cars are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike, appreciating their rarity and iconic status in automotive history. Their sporty performance, distinctive styling, and connection to the world of rallying ensure that the Escort RS remains a cherished and legendary car for generations to come.
