The Mazda 323, known as the Familia in Japan, is a compact car produced by Mazda from 1977 to 2003. The first-generation Mazda 323, produced from 1977 to 1980, was a rear-wheel drive model and marked the first time Mazda offered a front-engine, front-wheel drive (FF) car with its new "Allegro" platform.

The 1981-1989 model, the second generation, saw a radical departure from the first, with a new platform and a front-engine, front-wheel drive (FF) layout. It was first released in Japan in 1980, and became available in North America in 1981 as a 1982 model year car. This generation was available in several body styles, including a 3-door hatchback, a 5-door hatchback, a 4-door sedan and a station wagon. The 323 was offered with a range of engines, including the 1.3 L E5 and 1.5 L E8, both naturally aspirated. The 1.6 L E9 was also introduced in 1984. The 323 was particularly popular in Europe, becoming one of the best-selling cars in the segment during its lifespan. It was known for its fuel-efficient engines, practical design, and affordable price point.
