The Alfa Romeo 164 is an executive car that was produced by the Italian automaker Alfa Romeo from 1987 to 1998. It was the first Alfa Romeo to utilize a transverse front-engine, front-wheel drive layout, a departure from the traditional longitudinal rear-wheel drive setup. The 164 was designed by Pininfarina, and its sleek, aerodynamic bodywork, along with features like power steering, power windows, and air conditioning, positioned it as a luxurious and comfortable competitor in the premium car segment.

Under the hood, the 164 offered a range of powerful and refined engines, including a 2.0-liter twin-spark four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter V6, and a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6. These engines were mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. The 164's chassis was engineered for a balance of comfort and performance, offering a smooth ride and agile handling. The car's advanced suspension system, featuring MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear, further contributed to its dynamic driving characteristics. The 164 also debuted several innovative features, such as electronic fuel injection, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and a driver's airbag, which were uncommon in cars of its time. Despite its technological advancements, the 164 faced challenges in the market, including production issues and competition from established luxury brands. This, coupled with the decline of the Italian auto industry in the 1990s, led to relatively low sales figures for the 164. Nevertheless, the car remains a significant model in Alfa Romeo's history, marking a transition towards a more modern and technologically advanced era for the marque.
