The BMW C1 was a unique and revolutionary scooter that aimed to bridge the gap between motorcycles and cars. Introduced in 2000, the C1 was marketed as a "commuter scooter" with a strong emphasis on safety and practicality. It featured an innovative, enclosed design with a large windscreen, a full-length roof, and integrated side skirts, offering protection from the elements and enhancing rider comfort. The C1 was built on a tubular steel frame with a single-sided swingarm, and it was powered by a 125cc or 200cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine. The engine was paired with a CVT transmission, providing smooth and effortless acceleration. While not a true motorcycle, the C1's design incorporated many motorcycle-like features, including telescopic forks, a single disc brake at the front, and a drum brake at the rear.

A key feature of the C1 was its patented "active safety system," which included a stability control system and an electronic anti-lock braking system (ABS). The stability control system used sensors to monitor the scooter's lean angle, and if it detected an impending loss of control, it would intervene by applying the brakes and limiting engine power. The ABS system helped prevent wheel lock-up during braking, enhancing rider safety. Despite its innovative design and advanced safety features, the C1 faced several challenges. Its bulky size and relatively high price tag made it less appealing to potential customers compared to traditional scooters. Additionally, the C1's unique design, while innovative, also limited its versatility and off-road capabilities. Due to these factors, the C1 was discontinued in 2003 after just three years in production. However, its legacy as a pioneering scooter with a unique blend of motorcycle features and automotive safety technology lives on, inspiring future developments in the scooter market.
