The Škoda 120 was a small family car produced by the Czech manufacturer Škoda Auto from 1976 to 1990. It was the successor to the Škoda 100/110 series and was based on the same platform. The 120 was initially only available as a four-door saloon, but a five-door hatchback variant, known as the Škoda 120 L, was introduced in 1979. This hatchback version proved to be extremely popular, becoming the dominant model in the range. The 120 was powered by a 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 48 horsepower. There were several trim levels offered, including the standard L, the more luxurious LE, and the sporty LS. The LSE, introduced in 1984, featured a slightly larger 1.3-liter engine with 50 horsepower. The Škoda 120 was known for its simple, robust design and its affordability. It became a popular choice for families and businesses across Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. The Škoda 120's success was driven by its practicality, reliability, and low running costs. Despite its basic design, the car offered a comfortable ride and adequate performance for its time. The large boot space and versatile hatchback configuration made it ideal for everyday use. The 120 was also renowned for its durability and ease of maintenance, with its simple mechanicals allowing even inexperienced mechanics to perform repairs. Although the 120 was superseded by the Škoda Favorit in 1988, it continued to be produced alongside its successor until 1990. The 120 was also seen in many countries beyond the Eastern Bloc, particularly in developing nations where its affordability and ruggedness made it a popular choice. The Škoda 120's legacy as a budget-friendly, practical car has endured, further cemented by its popularity in the classic car scene today.
