The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV and V, produced from 1996 to 1999, are legendary performance cars that cemented the Evolution's reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack and the street. Built upon the foundation of the successful Evolution III, the IV and V models refined and enhanced the car’s already impressive attributes. The Evolution IV introduced a new, more aerodynamic body, featuring a larger front bumper, a rear spoiler with a built-in brake light, and wider wheel arches. These changes not only improved the car's aesthetics but also enhanced its downforce and stability at high speeds. Under the hood, the IV and V models continued to utilize the powerful 2.0-liter 4G63 turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which was further refined to produce even more power. The Evolution IV offered 276 horsepower while the Evolution V saw a bump to 280 horsepower. To handle the increased power, the suspension was also improved, with a new front strut brace, revised spring rates, and new shock absorbers. The Evolution V, launched in 1998, further amplified the car's performance capabilities. Its most notable addition was the Active Yaw Control (AYC) system, a groundbreaking technology at the time. AYC used an electronically controlled limited-slip differential to distribute torque to the rear wheels, allowing the driver to maintain control in challenging cornering situations. The Evolution V also benefited from a revised front bumper, redesigned side skirts, and a larger rear wing, further enhancing its aerodynamic performance and downforce. Together, the Evolution IV and V represent a pivotal period in the evolution of the Lancer Evolution. Their powerful engines, advanced technology, and aggressive styling cemented their status as icons of performance and paved the way for future generations of the legendary car.
