The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, affectionately known as the Evo, is a high-performance rally-bred sports sedan produced by Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 to 2015. The first three generations, the Evo 1, 2, and 3, laid the foundation for the legendary Evo lineage, establishing the car's reputation for blistering performance and rally dominance. The Evo 1, introduced in 1992, was based on the standard Lancer but featured a powerful 2.0-liter 4G63 turbocharged engine producing 247 horsepower, a five-speed manual transmission, and a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. The Evo 2, released in 1993, saw improvements in the turbocharger, intercooler, and suspension, resulting in a slight power increase to 252 horsepower. The Evo 3, launched in 1994, further refined the formula with a larger turbocharger, larger brakes, and a revised suspension, pushing the power up to 272 horsepower. All three generations featured aggressive styling with flared fenders, a prominent rear wing, and a purposeful stance. The Evo 1, 2, and 3 were homologation specials, designed to meet the FIA's Group A regulations for rallying. This meant that a certain number of road-going versions of the car had to be produced in order for Mitsubishi to compete in the World Rally Championship. Their lightweight construction, powerful engine, and sophisticated all-wheel-drive system made them incredibly competitive in rallying, earning Mitsubishi numerous victories and championships. The Evo quickly gained a loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciated its raw performance, handling prowess, and unique character. The first three generations of the Evolution laid the groundwork for the series' continued success, establishing a legacy of performance, innovation, and competitive spirit that would resonate with car enthusiasts for generations to come.
