The Renault R18, launched in 1978, was a compact family car that served as the successor to the Renault 12. It was available in several body styles, including a 3-door hatchback, a 5-door hatchback, and a 4-door saloon. The R18 was known for its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and reliable engines. Production of the R18 ended in 1986. The Renault Fuego, on the other hand, was a sporty coupe introduced in 1980 as a more stylish and powerful version of the R18. It featured a distinctive sloping roofline, a sleek profile, and a more powerful engine. Although sharing many components with the R18, the Fuego was marketed as a more luxurious and dynamic offering. Both the R18 and Fuego contributed to Renault's growing reputation as a manufacturer of affordable and reliable vehicles, particularly in the European market.

Under the hood, the R18 was initially equipped with a range of petrol engines, including the 1.4-liter Cléon engine, as well as a 1.7-liter and a 2.0-liter unit. Later on, a diesel engine was also introduced. The Fuego, aiming for sportier performance, received a more powerful 1.6-liter Cléon engine, capable of producing 95 horsepower. A turbocharged version was also available, offering 110 horsepower. While both vehicles shared some similarities in terms of their mechanical underpinnings, the Fuego's focus on performance and its distinct styling positioned it as a more distinct offering within the Renault lineup. Despite its relatively short production run, the Renault Fuego gained a reputation for its sporty handling and its stylish design. Although both the R18 and Fuego enjoyed a degree of success, they eventually faced challenges from newer competitors in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape, leading to their eventual discontinuation.
