The 1990 Eagle Talon was a sporty compact coupe that represented a turning point in the automotive landscape. It was the first vehicle to come out of the Diamond-Star Motors (DSM) joint venture between Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors, marking the start of a collaboration that would produce some of the most iconic and well-regarded performance cars of the 1990s. The Talon shared its platform and powertrains with the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Plymouth Laser, creating a trio of affordable yet capable sports cars that quickly gained a following amongst enthusiasts. While the Talon wasn't a complete reimagining of the Mitsubishi Eclipse, it featured unique styling cues, particularly a distinctively aggressive front end with a prominent grille and angular headlights, making it stand out from its siblings. Under the hood, the 1990 Talon offered a choice of two powerful engines: a 1.8-liter 4G63 turbocharged four-cylinder, producing 140 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque, and a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter 4G63 producing 92 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque. These engines were paired with a five-speed manual transmission, making the Talon a joy to drive on winding roads. The handling was sharp and responsive, thanks in part to its front-wheel drive layout and independent suspension. The Talon's combination of performance, affordability, and stylish design made it a hit with buyers. It was lauded for its sporty driving experience, its relatively low price point, and its unique blend of performance and practicality. The 1990 Eagle Talon was a true testament to the potential of the DSM collaboration, and it paved the way for a legacy of successful performance vehicles that would come to define a generation of car enthusiasts.
