The 1997 Fiat Marea was a compact car produced by the Italian automaker Fiat from 1996 to 2002. It replaced the Fiat Tempra and was offered in both sedan and station wagon body styles. The Marea aimed to offer a more modern and refined driving experience compared to its predecessor, featuring a spacious interior, a comfortable ride, and a range of economical and punchy engine options. The car was designed by I.DE.A Institute, the same design house responsible for the Fiat Punto, and notably featured a distinctive, aerodynamically-shaped front end with large headlights. Inside, the Marea provided a roomy cabin, emphasizing passenger comfort with features like generous legroom and comfortable seats. It also offered a range of equipment, including air conditioning, power steering, and an optional sunroof.

The 1997 Fiat Marea's engine lineup included a variety of petrol and diesel options, offering a balance between performance and fuel efficiency. The petrol engines ranged from the 1.4-liter four-cylinder to the more powerful 2.0-liter 16-valve unit, while the diesel choices featured the economical 1.9-liter turbodiesel. These engines, paired with a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions, contributed to the Marea's overall driving experience. The Marea also benefitted from a well-engineered suspension system, providing a comfortable ride even on rough surfaces. However, despite its strengths, the Marea struggled to achieve commercial success, facing stiff competition from other European and Japanese compact car offerings. Its relatively conservative styling and the perception of Fiat's reliability at the time may have contributed to its lackluster sales performance. Nevertheless, the 1997 Fiat Marea remains a valuable piece of automotive history, showcasing Fiat's design and engineering capabilities in the mid-1990s.
