The 1997 Isuzu Hombre, a compact pickup truck, marked a significant departure for the Japanese automaker. While Isuzu had previously established itself in the American market with its successful line of diesel-powered trucks, the Hombre aimed to tap into the growing popularity of compact pickups. Based on the Chevrolet S-10 platform, the Hombre shared its underpinnings with several other popular GM models, including the GMC Sonoma and the Chevrolet Blazer. This shared platform allowed Isuzu to offer the Hombre at a competitive price point while benefiting from proven GM engineering and reliability. The Hombre was available in both extended and standard cab configurations, offering a choice of two-wheel or four-wheel drive. Powering the truck was a choice of two gasoline engines: the 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine producing 115 horsepower or the 4.3-liter V6 engine delivering 160 horsepower.

While the Hombre was marketed as a distinct Isuzu offering, it was essentially a rebadged Chevrolet S-10. This strategy allowed Isuzu to leverage its existing manufacturing capabilities and share development costs with GM. However, it also led to a perception that the Hombre lacked a unique identity. In addition, the compact truck market was becoming increasingly competitive, with rival models from Toyota, Nissan, and Ford pushing the boundaries of design and technology. Despite its affordability and practicality, the Hombre struggled to stand out in a crowded marketplace. Production of the Hombre ceased in 2001, marking the end of Isuzu's foray into the US compact pickup truck segment. Nevertheless, the 1997 Isuzu Hombre remains a testament to Isuzu's willingness to explore new market segments and leverage existing partnerships to offer competitive products. Its legacy lies in its reliable performance and its contribution to Isuzu's presence in the American automotive landscape.
