The Mitsubishi Space Star, also known as the Colt in some markets, is a compact car that was produced by the Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors from 1998 to 2012. The first generation, launched in 1998, was designed as a replacement for the Mitsubishi Colt and was sold globally under various names, including the Space Star, Colt, and Verada. This model, intended for the European market, was a departure from the traditional "boxy" styling of its predecessor, adopting a more rounded and aerodynamic design. Available in both three and five-door hatchback configurations, the Space Star featured a range of petrol engines, ranging from a 1.1-liter to a 1.6-liter unit, offering various power output options. It was known for its practicality, offering a spacious interior and a good amount of cargo space for its size. The Space Star's popularity was further strengthened by the introduction of a 1.3-liter diesel engine in 2001, making it a more fuel-efficient option for European buyers. The car also boasted a comfortable ride and was praised for its decent handling. Throughout its lifespan, the Space Star received a number of updates, including a facelift in 2001 and the introduction of new engine options and safety features. The second generation, launched in 2004, was based on the same platform as the Mitsubishi Colt and featured a more modern design language. However, the second generation Space Star was discontinued in 2012 as Mitsubishi opted to focus on other segments. The Space Star nameplate was later revived in 2015, but this new model was a subcompact car positioned below the Colt and heavily catered towards emerging markets.
