The Vauxhall Calibra, known as the Opel Calibra in continental Europe, was a sporty coupe produced by the German automaker Opel (and its British subsidiary Vauxhall) from 1990 to 1997. Designed to rival the likes of the Honda Prelude and Toyota Celica, the Calibra aimed to offer sleek styling and engaging performance in a compact package. It featured a distinctive, aerodynamically-designed body, with a drag coefficient of just 0.26. This low-slung, two-door design was built on a modified platform shared with the Opel Vectra, providing a spacious and comfortable interior for its two passengers. The Calibra was offered with a range of engines, starting with the 1.6-liter 8-valve and culminating in the powerful 2.0-liter 16-valve turbocharged unit, developing 204 horsepower. The latter, along with the potent 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine, helped the Calibra gain a reputation for spirited performance. It was particularly popular in motorsport, finding success in touring car racing and even securing a victory in the British Touring Car Championship. Despite its sporty intentions, the Calibra remained a practical car, offering a comfortable ride and reasonable fuel economy. Its widespread appeal, coupled with its distinctive styling and performance credentials, made the Calibra a successful model for Vauxhall and Opel, with over 230,000 units produced during its seven-year run.
