The Vauxhall Opel Frontera, a compact sport utility vehicle (SUV), was produced by the German automaker Opel from 1991 to 1998. While the name "Frontera" was used for most markets, it was marketed as the "Monterey" in the United States. The Frontera was the first Opel SUV, and it was built on a platform shared with the Isuzu Rodeo. It featured a sturdy ladder frame chassis, a choice of petrol and diesel engines, and two- or four-wheel drive options. The first generation Frontera was available in three trim levels: "Club", "GL", and "Sport". It offered seating for five passengers and featured a roomy interior, offering ample cargo space for its era. The Frontera was known for its rugged construction, off-road capabilities, and relatively affordable price, making it a popular choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Despite its ruggedness, the Frontera wasn't without its drawbacks. Some critics noted its rough ride, basic interior design, and limited fuel efficiency. The Frontera also faced competition from other popular SUVs like the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V, which offered more modern features and better refinement. Despite these shortcomings, the Frontera remained a popular choice within the SUV market for several years. The vehicle was replaced by the Frontera B in 1998, which ushered in a new generation of the SUV that featured a more modern design, improved interior, and upgraded powertrain options. The Frontera B continued to build upon the legacy of its predecessor. While the Frontera (and later the Frontera B) was ultimately discontinued in the early 2000s, it served as an important stepping stone for Opel's diversification into the growing SUV market. It paved the way for future Opel and Vauxhall SUV models, such as the Antara, Mokka, and Crossland X, which have continued to enjoy success in the segment.
