The Renault 18, launched in 1978, was a significant car for the French automaker, marking a departure from its previous traditional designs. It was a front-wheel drive, compact family car that offered a modern, angular design, a spacious interior, and a range of fuel-efficient engines. The 18 was available in several body styles, including a hatchback, a three-door coupe, and a four-door sedan. The latter, marketed as the Renault Fuego, was a sporty coupe version with a sloping roofline and distinctive styling cues.

The Renault 18 and Fuego were powered by a range of four-cylinder gasoline engines, ranging from 1.4 liters to 1.7 liters, offering varying power outputs and fuel efficiency. While the earlier models featured carburetors, later models incorporated fuel injection, contributing to improved performance and emissions. The 18 was initially equipped with a four-speed manual transmission, but later models received a five-speed gearbox. The Fuego, however, was only available with a five-speed manual. While the 18 was aimed at family practicality, the Fuego targeted a more sporty driver demographic. Both vehicles shared a similar suspension setup with MacPherson struts at the front and a live axle at the rear, offering a comfortable and balanced ride. The Renault 18 and Fuego were marketed in Europe, South America, and Australia, solidifying their position as successful models for the Renault brand.
