The SAAB 95, 96, and Monte Carlo 850 are a series of compact cars produced by the Swedish automaker SAAB from 1959 to 1980. The 95 and 96 were initially marketed as "two-stroke" models, emphasizing their innovative use of two-stroke engines for a lightweight and fuel-efficient design. The Monte Carlo 850 was a special, high-performance version, primarily aimed at rallying and sporty driving. These vehicles, particularly the 96 model, became iconic symbols of Swedish engineering and design, known for their distinctive three-cylinder, two-stroke engines and their distinctive, aerodynamically designed bodies.

The 95 and 96 models, often referred to as the "Sonett" and "Sport," were distinguished by their unique, futuristic styling that emphasized practicality and performance. The 95, the larger of the two, featured a 5-door wagon body with a distinct sloping roofline, while the 96, a smaller, 3-door coupe, showcased a more sporting design with a low-slung profile. Both cars were built on a compact chassis and were designed for efficiency, using lightweight, aluminum-bodied construction. The Monte Carlo 850, a limited-production model, featured a more powerful, tuned version of the standard engine, along with upgraded suspension and brakes, making it a sought-after performance car for its time. Despite the success of these models, SAAB eventually transitioned its production to four-stroke engines, ultimately phasing out the two-stroke models in the early 1980s. However, the 95, 96, and Monte Carlo 850 continue to hold a special place in automotive history for their innovative design, distinctive character, and captivating driving experience.
