The Subaru XT, and its successor, the XT6, were compact sport coupes produced by Subaru from 1985 to 1991. These cars were the first to be equipped with Subaru's innovative, horizontally opposed, four-cylinder "boxer" engine. The XT, initially known as the "XT" or "XT Coupe," was introduced in 1985 for the 1986 model year. It was available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, and featured a 1.8-liter, 16-valve, naturally aspirated boxer engine. The XT was notable for its lightweight design, sharp handling, and spacious interior. In 1989, the XT underwent a significant redesign, becoming the XT6 for the 1990 model year. The XT6, now available only as an all-wheel-drive coupe, retained its boxer engine, but it was now a larger 2.2-liter unit. The exterior featured a more aerodynamic and modern design, and the interior offered a sportier and more luxurious feel.

The Subaru XT and XT6 were lauded for their handling and performance, particularly in all-wheel-drive configurations. The boxer engine provided smooth and responsive acceleration, and the car's low center of gravity and balanced weight distribution contributed to its excellent handling capabilities. Despite their sporty nature, the XT and XT6 also offered practicality, with a surprisingly spacious interior for a coupe. The XT6, in particular, was noted for its comfortable ride and quiet cabin. While not as widely popular as some other Subaru models, the XT and XT6 hold a special place in Subaru history as early examples of the brand's commitment to advanced technology and performance. These cars helped to establish Subaru's reputation for building reliable, capable, and fun-to-drive vehicles.
