The BMW 5-Series (E28) M535i, produced from 1985 to 1988, was a high-performance variant of the popular E28 5-Series sedan. Designed to bridge the gap between the standard 5-Series and the full-blown M5, the M535i offered a blend of luxury, performance, and practicality that made it a highly desirable car in its time. It featured a powerful 3.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-six engine, known internally as the M88/3, that produced 218 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 4-speed automatic, the M535i could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in around 7 seconds, making it one of the fastest sedans of its era. Beyond the engine, the M535i received a number of performance-enhancing upgrades over the standard 5-Series. These included a sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and a distinctive body kit with a more aggressive front bumper, side skirts, and rear spoiler. The interior also received a performance-oriented treatment, with sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a specialized instrument cluster. Despite its sporty nature, the M535i retained the luxurious appointments expected of a BMW 5-Series, offering comfortable seating, a spacious interior, and a wide array of amenities. While the M535i production ran only for three model years, it left a lasting impact on the automotive world, showcasing BMW's commitment to performance and luxury, and paving the way for future high-performance variants of the 5-Series.
