The 1981 BMW 518 is a compact executive sedan that marked a significant shift in the brand's philosophy. While previous 5 Series models emphasized performance and driving dynamics, the 518 aimed to broaden the appeal of the range by offering a more affordable and fuel-efficient option. This was achieved through the use of a smaller, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, dubbed the M10, which produced 90 horsepower. Despite its modest output, the 518 was still capable of respectable performance, boasting a 0-60 mph time of around 13 seconds. The 518's interior featured a minimalist design with comfortable seating for five. While not as luxurious as its larger siblings, the 518 provided a well-appointed cabin with basic amenities such as power steering, windows, and brakes. Although it lacked the sporty handling of the more powerful 528, the 518 maintained the hallmark BMW balance of comfort and practicality. It offered a composed ride and a decent amount of trunk space, making it a suitable option for daily driving and family trips. However, the 518's limited power output and lack of advanced features compared to its contemporaries meant it struggled to compete with rivals like the Audi 100 and Mercedes-Benz 200. Despite its short production run of only three years, the 1981 BMW 518 remains a testament to the brand's commitment to offering a wide range of models to suit diverse driver needs.
