The Opel Astra, produced from 1998 to 2000, represents the second generation of this popular compact car model. While it retained the Astra name, this iteration marked a significant departure from its predecessor, introducing a more modern and refined design language. Built on the GM2900 platform, the Astra G (as it's often referred to) was available in a variety of body styles, including a three-door hatchback, a five-door hatchback, a four-door saloon (known as the Astra Sedan in some markets), and a station wagon (called the Astra Caravan). Under the hood, the Astra G offered a range of petrol and diesel engines, including the 1.4L, 1.6L, 1.8L, and 2.0L petrol units, along with a 1.7L diesel engine. Power was sent to the front wheels, and buyers could choose between a five-speed manual transmission, a four-speed automatic, or a five-speed automated manual transmission known as Easytronic. The Opel Astra G was praised for its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and relative affordability. The 1998-2000 models were particularly noteworthy for their safety features, incorporating ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and driver and passenger airbags as standard equipment. Some variants even included side airbags and traction control systems. The Astra G also garnered a reputation for reliability and practicality, solidifying its position as a popular choice for family car buyers. Despite its relatively short production run, the Astra G remains a recognizable and respected model in the Opel lineup, its legacy carried on by subsequent generations of the Astra.
