The Porsche 911 Carrera 4 and Carrera 2, marketed as the 964 model, marked a significant transition in the evolution of the iconic sports car. Introduced in 1990, the 964 generation represented a bridge between the air-cooled and water-cooled eras of the 911, incorporating a number of significant updates while retaining the core DNA that defined the model. The Carrera 4 was the first 911 to feature all-wheel drive, offering enhanced stability and traction, especially in challenging weather conditions. The Carrera 2, on the other hand, maintained the traditional rear-wheel drive setup. Under the hood, both variants were powered by a 3.6-liter, flat-six engine, producing 250 horsepower in the Carrera 2 and 272 horsepower in the Carrera 4. This engine, known for its smooth and responsive nature, was coupled with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. The 964 also featured a revised suspension system, employing a multi-link rear axle for better handling and ride quality. The 964 was a significant step forward from its predecessor, the 911 (930) generation. The design, while still instantly recognizable as a 911, featured subtle but important changes. The front fascia was redesigned, incorporating larger air intakes for better cooling and a more aggressive appearance. The rear end was also revised, with the taillights now extending into the rear fenders and incorporating a distinctive "ducktail" spoiler. Inside, the 964 offered a more modern and refined interior, with improved ergonomics and a more luxurious feel. The 964 was a highly successful generation of the Porsche 911, praised for its performance, handling, and refinement. It cemented the 911's reputation as a true icon in the world of sports cars, bridging the gap between the classic air-cooled era and the modern, water-cooled era.
