The Mercedes-Benz 300SL (R129) is a two-door, two-seater sports car that was produced from 1989 to 1993, marking the return of the iconic SL designation after a 23-year hiatus. This generation of the 300SL, internally known as the R129, was a significant departure from its predecessor, the iconic W198 "Gullwing." It represented a more refined and opulent approach to sports car design, offering a blend of performance, luxury, and advanced technology. The 300SL was powered by a 3.0-liter, naturally aspirated, 24-valve, inline-six engine that produced 228 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque. This engine was paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.

The R129 300SL was a technological tour de force for its time. It featured a fully independent suspension with a sophisticated multi-link rear setup, a powerful anti-lock braking system (ABS), and an innovative "automatic rollover protection system" that deployed roll bars in the event of an accident. The car's interior was a luxurious haven, with high-quality materials, comfortable seats, and a comprehensive range of amenities. The 300SL was offered in a variety of trim levels, including the standard 300SL and the more powerful 300SL-24, which featured a 24-valve engine with 238 horsepower. The 300SL also offered a convertible version, offering the open-air experience that was synonymous with the SL designation. Despite its luxurious appointments, the R129 300SL retained the performance and handling characteristics expected of a Mercedes-Benz sports car, establishing itself as a worthy successor to the legendary Gullwing.
