The Mercedes-Benz 180, 180A, 180B, and 180C were a series of compact cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1953 to 1962. These models were known for their robust construction, simple yet stylish design, and impressive fuel economy, making them popular choices for both private and commercial use. The 180, launched in 1953, was the first post-war Mercedes-Benz model. It featured a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 52 horsepower, coupled with a four-speed manual transmission. This model was initially only available as a two-door sedan, but later a two-door convertible and a station wagon body style were added to the lineup. The 180A, introduced in 1955, was a major evolution of the original model, bringing several refinements. These included a larger and more powerful 1.9-liter engine, now providing 65 horsepower, along with a redesigned front suspension for improved handling. The 180B, launched in 1958, featured a further improved engine with a 2.2-liter displacement, now generating 75 horsepower. This larger engine also brought about a minor styling update to the exterior. Finally, the 180C, introduced in 1961, was the last iteration of the series. It incorporated minor design tweaks and featured a revised, more powerful version of the 2.2-liter engine, boosting output to 80 horsepower. Despite its compact size, the 180 series was praised for its comfortable interior, good visibility, and surprising levels of practicality. The 180 series left a lasting legacy, solidifying Mercedes-Benz's reputation for building well-engineered and desirable vehicles, even in the compact car segment.
