The Piper PA-23 Aztec is a six- to eight-seat, twin-engine, high-wing, fixed-tricycle landing gear general aviation aircraft produced by Piper Aircraft from 1962 to 1982. Designed as a successor to the Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacer, the Aztec was initially intended to be a larger and more powerful aircraft for the growing corporate and utility markets. The PA-23 was initially designated the "Apache," but later became known as the "Aztec" to avoid confusion with the Hughes OH-58 Kiowa, also known as the Apache. It quickly gained popularity for its versatility, comfort, and impressive performance. The Aztec was powered by two Lycoming IO-540 six-cylinder horizontally opposed air-cooled engines, producing 235 horsepower each for the PA-23-235 Apache model and 250 horsepower each for the PA-23-250 Aztec. The PA-23 Aztec came in various configurations, including the six-place standard Aztec, the eight-place "Six-Place" Aztec with larger cabin dimensions, and a cargo version. It featured a spacious cabin with a wide aisle, ample baggage space, and large windows offering excellent visibility. The Aztec was equipped with a retractable tricycle landing gear, making it suitable for diverse operating environments. The aircraft's robust construction and reliable engines made it a popular choice for commercial operations like air taxi services, aerial photography, and flight training. It also attracted private owners seeking a comfortable and well-equipped aircraft for business travel, personal transportation, and recreational flying. The Aztec's legacy remains strong, and many examples continue to fly today, proving its enduring appeal and proving it to be a valuable asset to the world of general aviation.
