The Mitsubishi FTO (short for "For the Owner") was a compact sports coupe produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors from 1994 to 2000. It was a successor to the Starion and Cordia, and was intended to be a more refined and luxurious offering in the sports coupe segment. The FTO was known for its distinctive styling, featuring a sleek and aerodynamic body with a sloping roofline and a prominent front grille. It was available in two distinct variants: the base model, powered by a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated engine, and the sporty GPX model, equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Both variants utilized a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, offering a balanced and engaging driving experience. The FTO's development emphasized advanced technology and performance. The GPX model, in particular, boasted a sophisticated engine management system with a variable-geometry turbocharger, enabling remarkable power output and responsiveness. The car's suspension was designed with an emphasis on handling and agility, featuring independent MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link setup in the rear. Inside, the FTO offered a comfortable and driver-focused cabin, with supportive seats, a well-laid-out dashboard, and a range of features that were considered luxurious for its time. Notably, the FTO was one of the first cars to feature an automatic climate control system. Although the FTO was well-received for its performance, styling, and features, its production run ended in 2000 due to declining sales, leaving a legacy as a cult classic for its enthusiasts.
