The BMW 8 Series E31, launched in 1989 and produced until 1999, was a grand tourer that represented the pinnacle of BMW's engineering and design prowess in the late 20th century. The E31 embodied a vision of luxury, performance, and sophisticated technology, capturing the spirit of the time with its sleek, aerodynamic design and powerful engine options. The car's low-slung, wedge-shaped profile, penned by Claus Luthe, was a departure from traditional BMW styling, featuring a long hood, short overhangs, and a raked windshield that emphasized its forward momentum. It was available in coupe and convertible body styles, both offering a spacious and luxurious interior appointed with high-quality materials and advanced features like climate control and a premium sound system.

Under the hood, the 8 Series offered a range of powerful engines, starting with the 5.0-liter V12 in the 850i, producing 300 horsepower and later boosted to 326 horsepower in the 850Ci. The top-of-the-line 850CSi was further enhanced with a 380 horsepower, 5.6-liter V12, making it one of the fastest production cars of its time. The 8 Series also offered the 840Ci, powered by a 4.0-liter V8 producing 282 horsepower, providing a more affordable entry point to the 8 Series experience. The E31 incorporated a double wishbone suspension system with adjustable shock absorbers, ensuring a refined ride and precise handling. Notably, the 8 Series was also one of the first BMW models to feature electronic stability control (ASC+T), further enhancing its safety and handling capabilities.
