The BMW C1 125 and C1 200 were innovative scooters produced by BMW Motorrad from 2000 to 2003. These unique vehicles, a departure from the traditional motorcycle design, combined the practicality of a scooter with the safety features of a car. The C1 boasted a distinctive enclosed, car-like cabin, offering protection from the elements and increased rider comfort. It featured a tilting, single-sided front wheel, reminiscent of a car's suspension, granting stability and a smoother ride. At the heart of the C1 were two engine options: a 125cc single-cylinder engine producing 11 horsepower in the C1 125, and a 200cc single-cylinder engine producing 17 horsepower in the C1 200. Both engines were known for their fuel efficiency and reliability, making the C1 an attractive option for urban commuters. Beyond its unique design and practical features, the BMW C1 stood out for its safety innovations. It was equipped with a three-point safety belt system, a feature rarely found in motorcycles at the time. The car-like cabin provided better protection in case of collisions, and the motorcycle's construction included crumple zones to absorb impact energy. The C1 also featured a unique "Active Steering" system that electronically stabilized the motorcycle when cornering, further enhancing rider safety. Despite its innovative design and safety features, the C1 faced challenges in the market due to its higher price compared to traditional scooters and the perception of being too "car-like" for some motorcycle enthusiasts. However, the C1 remains a testament to BMW's innovative spirit and its dedication to pushing the boundaries of motorcycle design.
