The BMW F 650 CS, a single-cylinder motorcycle launched in 1997, was a unique entry in the BMW lineup. It marked a departure from the traditional boxer engine, opting for a fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, 652cc single-cylinder engine from Rotax, notorious for their use in light aircraft. This powerplant generated 48 horsepower, a significant departure from the more powerful twins the brand was known for, yet still delivered a smooth and responsive ride. With a claimed weight of 181kg, the F 650 CS was a relatively lightweight option, offering agility both on and off-road. The bike was designed for versatility, featuring a comfortable upright riding position, a robust frame capable of handling rough terrain, and a comfortable seat for both rider and passenger. Despite its single-cylinder engine, the F 650 CS provided a surprisingly refined experience. The fuel injection system ensured smooth power delivery, and the low center of gravity combined with a telescopic fork and a rear monoshock to create a stable and predictable ride. The bike was also equipped with a standard 290mm front brake disc and a 220mm rear disc providing adequate stopping power. The F 650 CS was a unique and well-received model, appealing to riders looking for a versatile and approachable motorcycle with a distinct character. Although no longer in production, it remains a testament to BMW’s willingness to explore different avenues in motorcycle design, offering a compelling blend of off-road capability and comfortable touring potential within a compact and engaging package.
