The Citroën AX 46 is a compact hatchback that was produced by the French automaker Citroën from 1986 to 1993. It was the successor to the Citroën LN and LNA, and was designed to be an affordable and practical city car. The AX 46 offered a choice of three gasoline engines: a 1.0-liter unit delivering 45 horsepower, a slightly more powerful 1.1-liter engine with 60 hp, and a sportier 1.4-liter engine producing 75 hp. The 1.0L and 1.1L AX 46 models were known for their fuel efficiency and maneuverability, making them ideal for city driving and tight parking spaces. The 1.4L model, however, offered a more spirited driving experience, thanks to its relatively powerful engine. Its design featured a distinctive, boxy shape with a steeply raked windshield and a wide, flat rear end, which provided a surprisingly spacious interior for its compact dimensions. Inside, the AX 46 was functional and comfortable, with basic but effective controls and a simple dashboard layout.

Beyond its practicality, the AX 46 was praised for its handling and driving experience. Its lightweight construction and relatively low center of gravity contributed to its agility and responsiveness, making it a fun car to drive around tight corners. It offered a comfortable ride, despite its compact size, and the suspension offered a good balance between comfort and handling. While it was not the most luxurious or sophisticated car on the market, the AX 46 was dependable and affordable. It became popular for its ability to offer a balance between practicality and driving experience, making it a suitable choice for a wide range of drivers. While the AX 46 was discontinued in 1993, it remains a significant part of Citroën's history, as it was the first model to feature the company's innovative "hydropneumatic" suspension system. This system, which was later used in other Citroën models, provided a unique and comfortable ride, along with excellent handling and stability.
