The Subaru B9 Tribeca, also known simply as the Tribeca, was a mid-size crossover SUV produced by Subaru from 2006 to 2014. It represented Subaru's attempt to enter the larger, more traditional SUV market, departing from its usual compact and sporty offerings. The Tribeca was built on a modified version of the Subaru Legacy platform and shared its 3.6-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with the Outback. However, the Tribeca ditched Subaru's signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system for a more traditional, single-speed transfer case-based AWD system. This shift, coupled with its unconventional styling, particularly its distinctive front grille, made the Tribeca stand out in the crowded SUV landscape. Despite its unique features, the Tribeca struggled to gain traction in the market. Its handling, while competent, was not as sharp as its smaller Subaru siblings, and its interior felt cramped and lacking in refinement compared to its competitors. Additionally, the Tribeca's fuel economy was underwhelming, further contributing to its lack of popularity. Despite a mid-cycle refresh in 2010, the Tribeca failed to capture the hearts of consumers, leading to its discontinuation in 2014. The Subaru B9 Tribeca, although a valiant effort to diversify Subaru's lineup, ultimately fell short of expectations, becoming a footnote in the company's history.
