## The BMW C1: A Bold Experiment in Motorcycle Design

The BMW C1, produced from 2000 to 2003, was a unique and controversial motorcycle that attempted to bridge the gap between traditional two-wheeled machines and safer, more weather-protected scooters. Its most striking feature was its full-body plastic shell, providing occupants with a high degree of protection from the elements and offering a degree of crash safety not typically found on motorcycles. The C1 was powered by a 125cc liquid-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder engine, producing 11 horsepower, making it a relatively peppy city commuter. It featured an automatic CVT transmission, making it easy to ride and eliminating the need for shifting. Other innovative features included a tilting rear wheel for stability, a unique anti-lock braking system, and a "Safe-Lock" system that effectively turned the C1 into a scooter when parked - rendering it impossible to ride without a key.

Despite its innovative features, the C1 ultimately failed to achieve commercial success. While its design provided a level of safety and convenience not offered by traditional motorcycles, its high price point and bulky appearance deterred many potential buyers. Critics also argued that the C1 sacrificed too much of the "motorcycle experience" in favor of practicality, feeling that its enclosed design lacked the open-air feel that many motorcycle enthusiasts seek. Ultimately, the C1 was discontinued after only three years of production, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and a reminder that even bold departures from established design paradigms can struggle to find their place in the market.
