The ROVER MG 214 and 414, produced from 1989 to 1992, were compact hatchbacks that represented a significant step in the evolution of the MG brand. These vehicles were the first to be fully designed and manufactured by Rover Group after the company acquired the MG marque in 1982. While they shared a common platform with the contemporary Rover 200 series, the MG models were differentiated by their sportier styling and performance characteristics. The 214 was powered by a 1.4-liter K-series petrol engine, while the 414 received a larger 1.4-liter engine with a more powerful output. These engines, known for their smooth operation and relatively high revving capabilities, were paired with a five-speed manual transmission, offering an engaging driving experience.

Beyond the engine and transmission, the MG 214 and 414 were further distinguished by their unique design elements. These included a more aggressive front bumper with a distinctive honeycomb grille, a lower and wider stance, and larger wheels with wider tires. The interior featured sports seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a more driver-focused cockpit. While primarily focused on offering a sporty driving experience, these vehicles also provided a decent level of comfort and practicality. With their compact dimensions and hatchback configuration, they were well-suited for urban environments and offered a reasonable amount of cargo space. While not widely recognized as icons in automotive history, the Rover MG 214 and 414 played a significant role in reviving the MG brand and laid the foundation for the introduction of later, more renowned models like the MG F.
