The 2001 Oldsmobile Alero was a compact car produced by General Motors' Oldsmobile division. It was introduced in 1999 as a replacement for the Oldsmobile Achieva, and was offered in sedan and coupe body styles. The Alero was positioned as a more affordable option compared to the larger Oldsmobile Aurora, aiming to capture a wider range of buyers. It was known for its comfortable and roomy interior, offering seating for five, and a relatively smooth ride. In terms of powertrains, the Alero offered a variety of engine choices, including the popular 2.2L Ecotec four-cylinder engine, producing 140 horsepower, and a 3.4L V6 engine, capable of 170 horsepower. Transmission options included a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, depending on the engine choice and trim level.

The 2001 Alero came in different trim levels, with the base model being the GL, followed by the middle-range GLS, and the top-of-the-line GS. The GLS and GS models offered additional features such as alloy wheels, power windows and locks, and a premium sound system. However, the Alero was not a high-performance vehicle, as it was primarily designed for fuel efficiency and comfortable driving. While it was praised for its comfortable interior and smooth ride, the Alero was criticized for its lack of refinement and overall perceived quality compared to competitors like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. It was also criticized for its relatively low fuel economy figures, despite its compact size. Ultimately, the Alero did not achieve the same level of success as its predecessor, the Achieva, and production ended in 2004 when Oldsmobile was discontinued by General Motors.
