The Mazda Rotary Pickup, affectionately known as the "REPU," was a unique and innovative pickup truck produced by Mazda from 1973 to 1977. This compact truck was the first and only production vehicle to utilize Mazda's revolutionary Wankel rotary engine. The REPU's innovative design was a departure from traditional piston-engined pickups, offering a smooth and powerful driving experience. The rotary engine, smaller and lighter than a conventional piston engine of similar power, allowed for a more compact and agile truck. The REPU was available in two trim levels, the base model and the more luxurious "Deluxe" version. Both versions came equipped with the 12A rotary engine, producing 110 horsepower and offering a fuel-efficient ride. The REPU, with its unique design and advanced engine technology, quickly gained a reputation for its driving dynamics, offering a nimble and enjoyable driving experience that was uncommon in the pickup truck segment of the time.

While the REPU's rotary engine, with its high-revving nature, offered a compelling driving experience, it was not without its challenges. The rotary engine’s unique design and operation faced issues with fuel economy and reliability, especially compared to standard piston engines. These limitations, combined with the relatively high cost of production and repair, contributed to the REPU's limited production run. Despite its innovative engine, the REPU also faced competition from established players in the pickup truck market, such as the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10. Production of the REPU ceased in 1977, ending a brief but memorable chapter in Mazda’s history. While the REPU was a commercial failure, it remains a significant milestone in automotive history, demonstrating Mazda's pioneering spirit and its embrace of unconventional technology within the pickup truck segment. Today, the REPU is a sought-after collectible vehicle, appreciated by enthusiasts for its unique rotary engine and its legacy as a groundbreaking compact pickup truck.
