The Mazda RX2 and RX3, produced from 1971 to 1977, were sports coupes that marked a significant step forward for the Japanese automaker. These compact, rear-wheel drive vehicles were powered by a revolutionary engine, the 12A rotary engine. Developed by Felix Wankel, this unique engine design offered high power output with a smooth and silent operation compared to traditional piston engines. The RX2, introduced in 1971, was a slightly larger and more luxurious version of the original RX-3, which debuted in 1970. Both models were known for their sporty handling and agile performance, thanks to their lightweight construction and well-balanced chassis.

The RX2 and RX3 were offered in various trim levels, including the base models, the sportier "S" versions, and the luxurious "GS" models. While they shared the same basic engine and chassis, the RX2 was equipped with a more powerful 12A engine that produced 110 horsepower, compared to the RX3's 90 horsepower engine. Despite their relatively small size, these Mazda models were surprisingly spacious, with comfortable seating for four passengers. Their sleek and futuristic styling further enhanced their appeal, making them popular choices for enthusiasts seeking affordable and fun-to-drive sports cars. The RX2 and RX3 were successful in the Japanese market and garnered a loyal following in other parts of the world. Although production ended in 1977, these sporty Mazdas continue to be cherished by collectors and enthusiasts today.
